Homeowners told about need for thorough carpet cleaning

The importance of thorough carpet cleaning has been highlighted by a US-based firm, which has launched an initiative to show how much dirt exists on the average floor.

Bissell Homecare is endorsing a “white sock test”, which works on a similar premise to the white glove theory that a number of Domestic Cleaning enthusiasts use to monitor the cleanliness of worktops.

People have been encouraged to walk over a stretch of carpet in a white sock to see how much grime is attracted to the fibre.

Bosses at the floorcare appliance firm have suggested up to one pound of dirt can exist in each square foot of floor.

Even rigorous vacuuming is sometimes inadequate in maintaining pristine carpets and rugs.

As well as deploying a vacuum, the company has indicated that “regular deep cleaning” is needed to completely rid carpets of dirt.

“The “We Mean Clean” experts at Bissell recommend deep cleaning at least twice a year, or up to four times in homes with pets, young children, allergy sufferers or smokers,” a spokesperson said.

Last week, home expert Chrysteen Braun told the Long Beach Gazette that steam cleaning is the most effective way of sprucing up carpets.
