Washing and ironing London: Vivienne Westwood urges people to cut down on washing

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has urged people to cut down on washing their clothes when Domestic Cleaning.

The eccentric style icon has admitted that she herself rarely washes her clothes.

“I was on the bus on Saturday going down Whitehall. I just looked at everybody and there wasn’t one person who had a silhouette or stood out,” she told the Sun.

“They all looked like babies who had come out from a big washing machine – all easy-care jerseys and tights,” she explains.

“It is one of the worst things for the environment, all that washing. It has a huge impact.

“I don’t wash my own clothes very often.”

Indeed, it seems the 69-year-old is keen to take measures to help the environment.

The news provider reports that she cycles to works and very rarely has a holiday abroad, preferring to stay at home.

It follows a recent survey that shows many consumers also try to be environmentally friendly when choosing cleaning products and other household items.

A poll by Datamonitor found that 55 per cent of people think that labels stating ‘reduced packaging’ and ‘recyclable/compostable’ would improve their opinion of a product.
