A new survey reveals that the majority of teenagers do not carry out their fair share of the Domestic Cleaning duties.

According to an online poll commissioned by The Children’s Society, three-quarters (76 per cent) of 11 to 16-year-olds in the UK have never loaded a washing machine to clean their clothes, while 75 per cent are strangers to bathroom cleaning, reports the Press Association.

The report, which questioned more than a thousand youngsters ahead of an upcoming festival organised by The Children’s Society, found that young people are also clueless when it comes to ironing and household shopping.

Almost all (92 per cent) of respondents said they never shop for groceries, while over a third (35 per cent) have never cooked a meal.

The charity said the poll was conducted to highlight the vast differences between the lives of average teenagers who do no household cleaning chores and the experiences of an estimated 175,000 young carers who carry out such tasks from as young as five years old.

Jenny Frank, programme manager for The Children’s Society, said: “We want to see all local authorities delivering services to meet the needs of the whole family and so prevent excessive caring impacting on children’s well-being, education and childhoods.”
