Carry out domestic cleaning before selling home, says expert

Not carrying out domestic cleaning before putting a house on the market is one of the key reasons for property failing to sell, it has been claimed.

According to Michelle Lerner, writing in an article for Investopedia.com, home sellers should give their property a spring clean before putting it on the market, possibly using a professional cleaning service.

“Even the neatest households find the level of cleanliness required when a home is on the market to be burdensome,” she says.

“Consider hiring a Professional Cleaning service just before you put your home on the market and try to keep your home in that sparkling clean condition when potential buyers arrive.”

She also said it is important to “de-clutter” a home before trying to sell it, as this will give the impression of plenty of storage space and make it easier for the buyer to visualise their own possessions in the property.

“As a seller, one of the best and cheapest things you can do to entice buyers is to clear out your closets,” writes Ms Lerner.

The advice could be especially valuable following the recent news that UK mortgage lending fell to its lowest October level for a decade last month, meaning there is likely to be fewer buyers in the property market.
