Tenants call for council to clean up communal stairwells

Council tenants in Old Malden have called on local authorities to provide house cleaning services to improve hygiene levels within a tenement block.

Residents of Meldone, a housing estate in Sheephouse Way, have demanded that the council take action to improve conditions, after some residents started using public areas as toilets, reports This is Local London.

Tenants have complained that stairwells have been covered in dirt and urine, while used nappies have been spotted around public areas.

Bill Turner, 72, who has lived in Meldone for more than 30 years, told This is Local London: “The walls and stairs are absolutely filthy. In the last two years it has become really bad – I have made several complaints but so far nothing has been done.”

David Fraser, a councillor for Old Malden delivered a petition on behalf of the residents to the Malden and Coombe Neighbourhood Committee saying: “We, the residents of Meldone in Sheephouse Way, urgently request the council to eradicate the considerable odour coming from the stairwell by Steam Cleaning the stairs and walls.”

A council spokesman said that the local housing department currently does not have the resources to redecorate the stairs, but it is preparing to improve the block’s waste management.
