Residents warned of rogue domestic cleaners

Local residents in Derbyshire have been warned to be on alert for unscrupulous Domestic Cleaners and handymen around the area.

Trading standards authorities have been inundated with complaints from residents in Glossop about cold-calling firms that claim to offer moss cleaning using chemicals, reports the Manchester Evening News.

However, the claims that the chemical actually works and prevents roof damage are unsubstantiated and there are fears that vulnerable householders could be ripped off.

“They try to con residents in to thinking they are getting a bargain by quoting a highly-inflated price which, after a call to the head office, is significantly reduced,” said councillor Carol Hart, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for communities.

She stressed that the cowboy house cleaners also flout health and safety regulations and often do not use scaffolding, which can cause damage to properties.

“I would urge people to be very wary of buying from any trader who turns up unannounced on their doorstep and never give them any money up front,” Ms Hart added.

Householders in search of cleaning and odd job companies were urged to use the county council’s Trusted Trader scheme to find a reputable firm.
