Irish club members embark on litter picking

A local members’ club in Ireland has taken on the role of commercial cleaners to clean up their neighbourhood.

Members of the Kilkenny Lions Club were out in force to pick up litter as part of the city’s Tidy Towns campaign, reports Kilkenny People.

The litter pickers were led by the new Lions Club president Kieran Bollard and were joined by David FitzGerald, committee member of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful.

The impromptu contract cleaning team covered every part of Loughboy, Lovers Lane, Hebron Road and Johnswell Road, persevering despite heavy rainfall.

“The Lions Club is delighted to support the tremendous effort being put in to the 2010 Tidy Towns campaign in the City,” Mr Bollard told the paper.

“We appreciate the significance of Tidy Towns for local tourism and jobs. The Lions club are keen to be part of the big push for success.”

The Lions Club members have pledged to come out again during the early part of August for another spell of cleaning and litter picking.

Kilkenny County Council has previously expressed its commitment to improving awareness about littering.
