This Christmas, households have been advised to use Domestic Cleaning to fight against bacteria that can lead to food poisoning.
According to Canada.com, many people underestimate the threat of bacteria in their own kitchens, despite 80 per cent of food poisoning cases originating in the kitchen.
While cleaning can help combat this, the news provider claims that extra steps need to be taken as things that seem clean may actually be harbouring bacteria.
“A spotless, sparkling kitchen doesn’t necessarily assure good health. Salmonella bacteria from the Christmas bird can easily be spread if you wipe up some spilled juices from the thawing bird and then someone else comes along and uses the same cloth to wipe down the counters,” the website says.
It recommends using targeted disinfecting as well as regular hand washing.
Machine-washing kitchen towels at 60 degrees C or hotter, or boiling them in a pot of water, is also advised.
However, ensuring that people do not spread bacteria unwittingly with their hands is one of the most important things.
“The true secret to keeping a cleaner kitchen is to pay attention to what our hands are doing,” it says.
