Domestic cleaning helps homes sell

A new survey reveals that homeowners can improve the chances of selling their home by giving it a good domestic clean.

According to a poll of 200 estate agents conducted by Movewithus, giving a property a good House Cleaning is the best way to improve its saleability on the market, followed by clearing away any clutter.

Tidying up the garden and giving wall a fresh coat of paint were cited as other ways in which a home’s chances of finding a buyer can be improved.

The survey revealed that householders who neglect to clean their homes regularly could be limiting their chances of achieving a sale. Unpleasant smells, overgrown gardens and bad or personalised decor were found to lead to properties sitting on the market for long periods of time.

Adding an extra bedroom increases a property’s price by an average of 8.8 per cent, while adding a loft conversion boosts the price by around seven per cent.

Robin King, director of movewithus, said: “The summer of 2010 looks like being the busiest quarter for the housing market since 2007.

“However, many people fail to realise the top price for their property because they don’t appreciate what buyers are looking for.”
