Regularly undertaking domestic cleaning can help people avoid falling over in their homes, it has been suggested.
According to a representative of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), serious injuries can be avoided if hard floor cleaning is taken seriously.
Specialist physiotherapist in falls prevention at the CSP Vicky Johnston has insisted that while embarking on carpet cleaning, it is important to check flooring for any trip hazards.
This could be particularly important for elderly people who may suffer more damage during a fall, or indeed for those with stairs in their houses.
“Avoid clutter and clear up any spills as they happen,” she remarked.
“Fix down and remove any loose rugs, carpets or trailing wires. It is important to have good lighting, especially in hallways and stairways.”
A study conducted by the Royal College of Physicians has highlighted problems in the way NHS services deal with the prevention of falls, particularly among older people.
Statistics have shown that 500,000 elderly citizens attend accident and emergency wards each year after sustaining an injury when they have lost their footing.
Falls and fractures ultimately cost the country £2 billion every year.
