A school in Wales is making use of Contract Cleaning Services following a flood.
Burst water pipes, tanks and radiators caused extensive flood damage to Powys secondary school in Welshpool, which has had to shut to 950 children due back today (January 5th) after the Christmas holidays, with only A-level students allowed to return.
A clean-up operation has begun, with head teacher Jim Toal calling Powys council and other contractors while a specialist team will be hired to work with asbestos exposed by damage to the school’s kitchen.
“The school theatre, corridors, the two gymnasiums and the kitchen have been affected, and this has left us with a massive headache at the start of the new term,” Mr Toal told the BBC.
“The problem is compounded by brown asbestos which was in the kitchen ceiling, and I understand this is the worst asbestos to deal with.”
He said the flooding had been caused over the Christmas period when pipes began to thaw after freezing during a spell of cold weather.
Meanwhile, Overdale Community Primary School in Scarborough has been forced to close after a burst water pipe caused the ceiling to collapse.
