Brits neglect mattress cleaning duties, new survey reveals

A new survey suggests that many people in Britain are neglecting their mattress cleaning duties.

According to a poll conducted by Sheilas’ Wheels home insurance, half a million Brits carry out their bed sheet and mattress cleaning just three times a year, allowing dirt and dead skin cells to accumulated within their mattresses.

Furthermore, one in six people said that they wait at least a month before washing their bed sheets.

The survey suggests that a large number of people may be in need of professional mattress cleaners to deal with the dirty sheets and bedding they have no time to clean.

Those under the age of 25 were found to have among the dirtiest beds out of all of those questioned in the survey.

Researchers point out that up to ten per cent of the weight of an unwashed pillow can be made up of dead skin and mites. Moreover, a dirty bed is estimated to have about ten million bedbugs.

Jacky Brown, of Sheilas’ Wheels home insurance, said: “The bed is one of the most used and expensive items in the home – so it’s astonishing that more Brits aren’t keeping it clean.”

She added that the average person forking out up to £1,020 on their beds sleeps alongside ten million bed bugs and dust mites every night.
