Baking soda excellent for blocked drain pipes

House cleaners seeking for ways to unclog a blocked drain pipe should consider using baking soda, an expert has advised.

Allison Lind, of Shelterpop, advised Domestic Cleaners to mix together one cup of baking soda, one cup of salt and a quarter of a cup of cream of tartar and stir up the concoction in a sealable plastic container.

After it is fully mixed, a quarter of a cup of the solution should be poured into the drain and left to do its work. Two cups of boiling water can also be poured into the drain and left to stand for about an hour.

For those who do not have cream of tartar to hand, half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of white vinegar can be used instead.

“Cover the drain and let the mixture stand for five to ten minutes,” Ms Lind commented.

“Finally, pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. Apparently the baking soda and vinegar dissolve fatty acids, allowing the clog to wash down the drain.”

Other natural cleaning substances such as lemon juice can be used if cleaners do not like the strong aroma of vinegar.
