Convicted criminals in York are repaying their debt to society by cleaning the city’s Walmgate area.
As part of the Community Payback Scheme, offenders who have been handed community punishment sentences took on the role of contract cleaners for a day to clear litter and debris in the local area, reports the York Press.
Police from the Guildhall Safer Neighbourhood team also took part in the cleaning day, focusing on litter hotspots alongside the offenders.
The drive comes after residents raised concerns about the high levels of litter in the area, which can compromise health and safety.
Police community support officer Joe Spooner said the graveyard at St Denys Church was completely cleaned and weeded, litter was cleared away from the streets and the kerbs were swept.
“The area looked significantly better at the end of the day; everyone worked really hard,” he commented.
“This is the second time we have done an event like this – we did a similar event last year and we hope we will have many more in the future.”
